A historic day for the preservation of species:

Free living wisents (‘European bison’) in the Rothaargebirge / visit the biggest land mammals of Europe at the ‘Wisent wilderness on the Rothaarsteig’

For the first time, there are now free roaming wisents in Western Europe. On April 11, 2013, a group of eight wisents was released to the wild near Bad Berleburg after about ten years of preparing work (more information here)

For visitors, there is the ‘Wisent wilderness on the Rothaarsteig’ - here, interested ones may experience a second - currently six-headed wisent group - in a 20-hectar natural sanctuary. Because the wisents were (on 11 April 2013) released to an area of more than 10,000 hectars, they can hardly be spotted by hikers. Therefore, there is the ‘wisent wilderness’ with the second herd.
