Die Geschichte

From the stone age to contemporary art

For the first time, the wisent was documented by humans in stone-age cave paintings. The earliest of these testimonies are more than 30,000 years old.

The wisent paintings in the cave of Altamira in Northern Spain gained particular famousness. The murals there emerged from approximately 16,000 over a period of approximately 5,000 years B.C.. The cave displays nearly 1,000 paintings, drawings and engravings. In addition to wild boar, deer and horses, many wisents are shown.
Also over the following millennia, the majestic animals found a firm place in art and culture, e.g. in the work of Pliny: the Roman military commander, confidante of Emperors and participant in various campaigns in Germania, has made also a name as a scientist.

Notes on the wisents are found in his notes from the middle of the 1st century after A.C.. Even in the medieval ‘Nibelungenlied’ the wisent is mentioned. And in the first German-speaking animal description book by Conrad Gesner from the 16th century, it also found entrance.

Special importance had the wisent in the past centuries for the Polish art – as most animals still survived there.
